READYMADES

This project is a poet’s search for found language with a camera. Each image is a single word or phrase taken from its original context, and by focusing on that word in a new image, it takes on range of new potential meanings. One strategy of poetry is to take familiar language and to make it new and slightly strange, which urges a reader to take pause and wonder. This moment of engagement is at the center of the Readymades project.

Each image comes from the most familiar of everyday interactions with our visual and written culture. These words are photographed from posters, billboards, sidewalks, graffiti, bus stops, building signage, etc. This project is grounded in the practice of found language and instantaneous composition. In this way image and text interact to construct alternative readings of familiar language.

Photography serves as the vehicle for a new kind of readymade poetry.
